Education and Training

Melbourne Children’s Campus has a strong history of training passionate health professionals who provide excellent care.

For many, mental health and wellbeing are part of the picture in holistic care they give. The Campus Mental Health Strategy’s aim to make mental health everyone’s business will be underpinned by education that will improve staff knowledge, skills and confidence to support infants, children, young people and their families and carers

We will teach evidence-based approaches, focusing on increasing staff confidence and competence. We will adopt high impact ways of engaging and educating to embed practices and empower staff resulting in positive mental health and wellbeing outcomes.

Campus Mental Health Education Strategy activities build on this foundation to...

  • Increase understanding of mental health and how everyone can support this
  • Increase Knowledge, skills and confidence in supporting and managing mental health.
  • Increase use of holistic and evidence-based care
  • Increase use of family-centred and trauma-informed care.
  • Increase use of measurement-based care
  • Develop learning opportunities with professionals, people with lived-experience and diverse backgrounds.

The Campus supports teaching in evidence-based approaches so kids and their families get the consistent and optimal care using everything from continued education and simulation to specialised training. Education will focus on increasing confidence in supporting specific mental health problems, but also on communication and working in ways that are most beneficial for the child and their family and support their teams. We will empower workers to help contribute to positive outcomes for children.

Our Mental Health Education and Training.

We aim for high impact teaching to support early identification of children and optimal care.

We will develop learning pathways starting with a set of basic principles for a wide group, adding layers to build specific skills as required.

Working with Campus partners and the excellent health educators and Learning Hub in the Royal Children’s hospital, we will provide engaging and fit for purpose training.

We recognise:

  • The many learning opportunities available across the Campus and externally.
  • The limited time professionals have to learn.
  • The different learning needs depending on roles and responsibilities.
  • The need to recognise the different levels of pre-existing knowledge and skills .
  • The benefit of practicing some skills in simulation to increase confidence.
  • The need to set priorities with designated educators, health professionals and people with lived-experience.
  • The current challenges managing the number of children presenting with complex mental health disorders.
