Why mental health care matters to me.
I was drawn to mental healthcare during a time when the traditional medical model—focused on illness and diagnosis—was beginning to be questioned. I remember asking a psychiatrist tutor, “So what is normal then?” It sparked a lively, lasting conversation that underscored something I’ve come to believe deeply: that understanding someone often begins with asking what has happened to them, not just what is wrong with them.

This kind of meaningful inquiry sits at the heart of the Mental Health Strategy. It backs curiosity with evidence, and gives staff practical tools to support people more effectively and compassionately. That makes perfect sense to me.

Fun fact: My grandfather encouraged my inner tech geek, so I became a technician. But I noticed my nurse girlfriend was having more fun in healthcare than I was in telecoms—and I’ve had a foot in both worlds ever since. Working in the CMHS team is my ultimate, perfect bi-pedal job.
