Evaluation of the Behaviour Support Profile
The Campus Mental Health Strategy’s Trauma-Informed Preventative Care research project, “Evaluation of the Behaviour Support Profile (BSP)” aims to assess the effectiveness, usability, and acceptability of the BSP to guide improvements.
The BSP is a trauma-informed preventative care tool integrated into the electronic medical record (EMR) at the Royal Children’s Hospital.
It documents psychosocial needs, communication preferences, and strategies to prevent and reduce distress for patients in paediatric healthcare.
We are currently working to optimise its usability and accessibility to better support staff in delivering patient-centred care.
Evaluation of the BSP
In 2024 we conducted a mixed-methods evaluation of the BSP and presented our findings at the Melbourne Children's Nursing Research and Clinical Innovations Symposium.
Some of the key insights from this study include the BSP's ability to enhance care-planning, strengthen staff-patient engagement, and improve communication between staff and families.
The evaluation also identified areas for improvement like increasing accessibility within the EMR and expanding access for children, young people, and families to contribute information.
