Overview

We are working to increase staff knowledge of trauma and the impact it can have on everyone at the RCH.

To do this, we have developed, piloted, and are implementing a foundational training package for all RCH staff.

Our approach

The training package was developed in collaboration with young people, parents, and carers with lived experience, alongside clinical experts, researchers, and educators from the campus to ensure it is practical, relevant, and responsive to the needs of those providing and receiving care.

It was developed as an eLearn on Learning HERO and focuses on three key content areas:

  • trauma knowledge
  • paediatric medical traumatic stress
  • staff wellbeing.

The eLearn was piloted in 2024 and 2025 in Koala/Cardiology and the Emergency Department, with additional participants from across the RCH. Staff completed pre- and post-training assessments to measure changes in knowledge, attitudes, and self-rated competence in TIPC. Research analysis is currently underway.

Lived experience engagement

The TIPC Foundational Training was co-designed with Lived Experience Advisors (LEAs), who are young people, parents, carers, and supporters. This ensures that the voices of those with first-hand experiences are embedded in the learning.

Throughout the development process, LEAs played a key role in shaping the content, ensuring it reflects their experiences, and promotes meaningful, patient-centred care.
