Dec 2019: Mental Health Strategy E-update
This is the first of our e-updates on the progress of the development of the Campus’s Mental Health Strategy. Thank you for your input and engagement as stakeholders, it is very important to the Strategy being relevant and effective in improving the mental health care of children and adolescents, and their parents/carers and families.
Last month we welcomed Belinda Horton, Senior Project Coordinator, to the Working Group who has been working through the very rich information from interviews and within documents relevant to the Strategy.
Activity updates:
- Interviews with more than 34 stakeholders about their views of what is not working well, what is working well and ides for improvement
- Presentation to the Campus Council in November 2019 with a progress update and discussion of key issues
- Governance and planning meetings with members of the Strategy Steering Committee
- Half day workshop on 13 December 2019 with stakeholders to refine the vision for the Strategy and prioritisation of suggested activities
- Review of recent external reports relevant to the Strategy, including:
- Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System Draft Report
- Productivity Commission Inquiry into Mental Health Draft Report
- Commission for Children and Young People report into the children who died by suicide and were known to Child Protection
- Commission for Children and Young People report into systemic inquiry into the lived experience of children and young people in the Victorian out-of-home care system
- Victorian Auditor-General’s Office report into Child and Youth Mental Health
Draft vision statement for the strategy:
By 2025, as a Campus, to be a leader in co-creating, delivering and evaluating best quality and equitable care for the mental health of infants, children and adolescents and their families.
Key Strategic Areas
Developed based on the outcomes of the stakeholder interviews, the following areas of focus are likely to provide the structure for the Strategy:
- Governance and leadership
- Family-centred care
- Evidence base (research)
- Consistent and quality mental health care (clinical care)
- Workforce capabilities and capacity
- Advocacy
Next steps:
- Commitment to ongoing inclusion of all stakeholders in the development of the Mental Health Strategy, including participation in the working groups implementing the prioritised activities
- Finalise vision with Campus Mental Health Strategy Steering Committee
